With the discovery of the book, January begins to grapple with these revelations and finally exert control over her own life. The pressure to act as expected, to always be the good girl is one we can all sympathize with. It begs the question of how pressures from parents, and even the world, can force us to suppress a core element of our being. Locke The impacts her time with him had on her. She shares her experience growing up with Mr. January is a relatable main character to follow, and serves as the narrator. A key message throughout the book is the power of words, and Harrow demonstrates the power perfectly with her writing. It paints a picture of the world, evokes emotion and sets a mysterious ambiance over the whole novel. It weaves magic directly into our world, albeit magic that only a few are aware of.

She employs a lyrical style that swiftly entrances. Well-written and imaginative, it swept us all away for many of the same reasons. If you'd like to join us for our next read, please do ! I am bummed this was was a fail for me but thankfully, some folks liked it and had a good time. I recommend watching the meeting because there were a few folks who LOVED this book and I love that for them. Near the end of the book there are mentions of doors that lead to magical lands of dragon and flying cats, etc. The hyper-fixation of the color/race of everyone January met, including herself, the back and forth between the book within a book was confusing at times. I compared it to standing in line at the DMV in the meeting. There was a pacing issue that I struggled with the most. I was set up for a great success here and it really fell flat. It has been on my TBR for so long, the cover is gorgeous, the premise sounded so cool and the main character's name is January (my birth month). I really hate to say it, I hope I don't sound ridiculous, I did not enjoy this book and that kills me because I really wanted to. It is a low fantasy, historical fiction with flowery language and a very intriguing plot. For the month of August, Weirdo Book Club was feeling witchy so we selected The Ten Thousand Doors of January as our alternate read.
